Russia strikes Ukraine for the first time with its latest hypersonic missiles

Russo Ukraine War: This was the first use of Kinjal hypersonic weapons, which Moscow calls a “special military operation” in western Ukraine.

Russia on Friday used its latest Kinzel hypersonic missiles for the first time in Ukraine to destroy an arms storage site in the country’s west, the Defense Ministry said.
Russia has acknowledged never before using high-precision weapons in combat, and state news agency RIA Novosti said it was the first use of Kinjal hypersonic weapons during the conflict in western Ukraine.

“The Kinjal aviation missile system with hypersonic aeroballistic missiles destroyed a large underground warehouse containing missiles and aviation ammunition in the village of Delyatin in the Ivano-Frankivsk region,” the Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday.

A Defense Ministry spokesman declined to comment when reached by AFP.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has dubbed the Kinjal (Dagger) missile “an ideal weapon” that can fly at 10 times the speed of sound and can overcome air-defense systems.

The Kinjal missile is one of the new weapons that Putin unveiled in his address to the nation in 2018.

Delyatin, a village at the foothills of the picturesque Carpathian Mountains, is located outside the city of Ivano-Frankivsk.

The region of Ivano-Frankivsk shares a 50-kilometre (30 mi) long border with NATO member Romania.
