On 30 September, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced Ukraine’s bid to expedite the process of NATO membership as Russian President Vladimir Putin formally announced annexation of 18% of Ukraine’s territory.
Since all 30 members require a consensus regarding the inclusion of Ukraine, the country’s membership is nowhere near that.
Security Council Deputy Secretary Nikolai Petrushev and Alexander Venediktov, a powerful ally of President Vladimir Putin, warned that a move to grant Ukraine full NATO membership would be suicidal.
“The suicidal nature of such a move is understood by NATO members themselves,” he said.
The warning also comes amid heavy shelling by Russia in residential areas of Ukraine, which it claims as a “terrorist attack” by Ukrainian forces on the Kerch Bridge, which connects the Russian mainland to the Crimean peninsula.

President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly slammed the US for promoting NATO’s eastward expansion, especially for former Soviet republics such as Ukraine and Georgia, which Russia considers to be within its sphere of influence.
