Russian forces on the northeastern edge of Kyiv

Russian forces rolled their armored vehicles to the northeastern edge of Kyiv on Thursday as they approached attempts to surround the Ukrainian capital.
The agency’s AFP team observed smoke bubbles rising over the village of Skybyn, just a few hundred meters behind the last checkpoint that demarcated the northeastern city of Kyiv.
Ukrainian soldiers described a night of heavy fighting for control of the main highway leading to the city.

“There are military operations in Skybin,” said a soldier who agreed to be identified only as Sergius, adding that one column of Russian armored equipment had been partially destroyed.
Kyiv:
The AFP team witnessed the Grad rocket strikes on Velyka Dymerka, a neighboring village five kilometers (three miles) outside the city of Kyiv, which on a sunny and bitter cold day mostly stood abandoned.
At least half a dozen Grad rockets rained on the empty road, hitting several homes that seemed empty at the time and damaging a journalist’s vehicle.
However, the presence of Ukrainian forces in the village was minimal, and locals said heavy fighting took place at night.
“They were still out yesterday, but they started coming in yesterday,” said Vasily Popov, a 38-year-old ad salesman.
“It’s scary, but what to do isn’t really where to run or hide. We live here.”
Russian forces have slowly surrounded Kyiv, reaching its northwestern edge on the first day of the attack on Ukraine on February 24.
The northwestern suburbs of Kyiv, such as Irpin and Bucha, have endured more than a week of projectile fires and bombings, leading to mass evacuations.
The roads leading to the north-east, leading to less populated villages, were mostly open in the first week of Russia’s offensive.

But Russian forces last week carried out a deadly air attack on the city of Chernihiv about 125 kilometers away.
Since then, they have made rapid progress towards Kyiv, leaving the city of three million people, and only its southern roads are open for possible evacuation and the supply of new supplies.
