He was being treated for a heart condition at the hospital, which is known for serving Russia’s elite and has earned the nickname ‘Kremlin Clinic’, the Russian news agency Interfax quoted and reported.

Mr. Maganov’s company opposed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Vice News report adds that Mr Maganov was taken to hospital after he complained of being depressed. That’s the hospital where former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev died earlier this week.

According to the BBC, Lukoil confirmed Mr Maganov’s death but said he “passed away after a serious illness”.

Local authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause behind the death of the businessman, the outlet said.

Lukoil was one of the few major Russian companies to call for a ceasefire in Ukraine after Moscow sent its forces to the pro-Western country in February.

In March, the company’s board issued a statement calling for an “immediate” end to the war, expressing sympathy for those affected by the “tragedy”.
