Russian forces continued to bomb Ukrainian cities, launching at least four missile attacks on Kharkiv, the second largest city, as Ukraine fought back by firing artillery and hitting ammunition depots inside Russia.

Several explosions were reported in Russia’s Belgorod region on Friday. The attack was announced by the regional governor on the social media site Telegram. Ukrainian authorities have not claimed responsibility for the attack.

Fighting in Ukraine comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin defended recent moves to escalate the war by deploying more troops to the country.

Putin said on Friday that there was no need to launch new large-scale attacks on Ukraine and that Russia was not looking to destroy the country. At the same time, the Russian leader said he had “no regrets” about the recent mobilization of 222,000 Russian reservists to fight in the war and conflict in Ukraine.

At a news conference on Friday in Astana, Kazakhstan, Putin said 16,000 of the new recruits had already been deployed “in units carrying out combat tasks.”

Russian media recently reported at least seven deaths from recruits. The casualties come as Russia’s defense ministry has faced criticism from pro-war Russian military analysts for deploying untrained recruits in combat.

Despite the rising death toll, Putin told reporters that his action to launch a military offensive in Ukraine was “timely and right”.

Hours before Putin spoke, Russian missiles and drones targeted more Ukrainian cities and towns for the fourth day in a row. At least five people were killed in Ukraine’s southern city of Mykolaiv, officials said.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s military said it had captured more than 600 settlements from Russian forces in the past month, according to the country’s Ministry of Reunification of Temporarily Occupied Territories, as Russian forces attacked dozens of cities in Ukraine. The attack continued, killing several civilians.

The ministry said late Thursday that some 502 settlements had been liberated in the northeastern Kharkiv region, where Ukrainian forces advanced deep into Russian lines last month, and that 75 areas had been recaptured in the highly strategic Kherson region. .

The ministry said 43 settlements in the Donetsk region and seven in the Luhansk region were liberated.

“The area of the Free Ukrainian Territories has increased significantly,” the ministry said in a statement on its website. The report could not be independently verified.

Citizens of Ukraine’s Russian-occupied Kherson region are expected to start leaving for Russia on Friday. Vladimir Saldo, the Russian-appointed leader of the region, asked Russia for evacuation aid.

The move is a sign that Ukrainian forces are moving closer to illegally occupied territory. The first evacuations are expected to arrive in eastern Russia on Friday.

This announcement happens as Defenders Day to celebrate the fighters of the country. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his gratitude to “everyone who is fighting for it now” in a statement released on Friday.

In other developments, the United States warned that it could impose sanctions on individuals, countries and companies that provide ammunition to Russia or support its military-industrial complex, as Washington over the war in Ukraine. tries to increase the pressure.

At a gathering of officials from 32 countries to discuss sanctions on Russia, Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Ademo said the department would issue guidance on Friday clarifying whether Washington is ready and capable of taking such action.

In addition, the Biden administration is set to unveil a new security aid package for Ukraine. Military aid is expected to include munitions and vehicles, but does not include critical new capabilities or counter-air defense, according to two US officials briefed on the $725 million package.
