Russian missiles strike Kyiv, shattering the spirit of peace

Russia’s Defense Ministry says airstrikes in the Ukrainian capital have destroyed tanks and other weapons donated by the West, which in an attack on Sunday shattered five weeks of fearful peace in Kiev as President Vladimir Putin warned the West about supplying long-range rocket systems to the West. Ukraine.

Putin said that if Moscow went ahead with such deliveries, “we have not hit yet” would hit the target. It was not immediately clear if Putin was talking about new targets inside or outside Ukraine.

Russian forces attacked railway facilities and other infrastructure in the capital, Kiev, early Sunday. The operator of Ukraine’s nuclear power plant, Energoatom, said a cruise missile was approaching the capital about 350 kilometers (220 miles) south of the Pivadenokrynsk nuclear plant – citing the danger of a near miss.

It was not immediately clear from Ukraine that the Russian airstrikes destroyed the tanks.

Kyiv has not faced such a strike since UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s April 28 visit. The early morning attack raised fears of an air strike and showed that Russia still had the ability and the will to strike at the heart of Ukraine, instead of concentrating on its efforts to the east.

Growing concern in Moscow, the attack was aimed at thwarting the repatriation of Ukrainian fighters.

In a post on the Telegram app, Russia’s Defense Ministry said that high-precision, long-range air-to-air missiles were used. It said the attack on the outskirts of Kiev destroyed T-722 tanks supplied by Eastern European countries and other armored vehicles located in the car repair business.

Russia’s February 2 invasion of Ukraine has killed thousands of civilians and soldiers, evicted millions of people from their homes, imposed massive sanctions on Putin’s government and allies, and cut off critical wheat and other grain exports from Ukraine via the Black Sea. Ports – Restricting access to bread and other products in Africa, the Middle East and beyond.

In a televised interview on Sunday, Putin strongly condemned Western arms supplies to Ukraine, saying their goal was to prolong the conflict.

“In my opinion, the only goal of all this fuss over the additional distribution of weapons is to drag out the armed conflict as much as possible,” Putin said, referring to the US plan to supply Kiev with multiple launch rocket systems. He stressed that such supplies are unlikely to change much for the Ukrainian government, which he said is already compensating for the damage caused by the rocket.

If Kyiv gets a long-range rocket, he added, Moscow will “come to the right conclusion and use our means of destruction, which we have in abundance, so that we can hit objects that have not yet hit.”

The missiles hit Kiev’s Darnitsky and Niprovsky districts, Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said in a telegram messaging app, breaking the Kremlin’s recently reduced goal of previously occupying the entire Donbass region. Moscow-backed separatists have been fighting Ukrainian forces in Donbass for eight years and have established a self-proclaimed republic.

In recent days, Russian forces have focused on capturing the city of Sieverodnetsk.
