The Sikkim government on Tuesday introduced a bill in the assembly proposing to create two more districts in the state.

The Sikkim (District Reorganization) Bill, 2021 was introduced by Minister for Land Revenue and Disaster Management Kunga Nima Lepcha House on the second day of the 5th session of the 10th Legislative Assembly.

He said the new districts would be known as Pakyong sub-division of East Sikkim and Soreng sub-division of West Sikkim.

Explaining the objectives of the government and the reasons for the proposal, he said the new districts would strengthen the administration in the face of growing population and the aspirations of the people.

With the creation of Pakyong and Soreng, the total number of districts in the Himalayan state will reach six.
