Sikkim: Insult to Mahatma Gandhi’s plaque on MG Marg
Last week, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu’s scheduled visit to Sikkim sparked a ruckus with several ceremonial dais erected on the busy Mahatma Gandhi Marg in Gangtok to welcome him.
However, the Vice President’s visit was canceled due to incessant rains and landslides in the state. Interestingly, this was the fifth time that his visit to Sikkim was cancelled.
Naidu was scheduled to visit the busy city for his visit as per the itinerary of the state government. At the entrance, as has been customary, the open space leading to MG Marg has long been a venue for various events on MG Marg, and was no different for the Vice President’s visit.

This time only the stage will reach the right feet of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. However, amidst the construction and then removal of the temporary Tatkal pandals, a plaque bearing the name and year of birth of the Mahatma was torn down.
The news was mostly swamped with the plaque, but some citizens saw the destroyed plaque, and were quick to post the photos on social media.

Sources in the government sector have informed, “Perhaps it was destroyed while removing the pandals around Wednesday evening. That was an accident. The State Urban Development Department issued a strong objection to this and ordered immediate restoration and action against those involved in the accidental desecration of the plaque.
