Struggle in eastern Ukraine, Russian forces strike in Kyiv

Russian forces seized the town of Siviarodnetsk on Sunday under heavy pressure, one of the last obstacles to occupying the Luhansk region. But often in this war of oppression, the Russian army finds a difficult path, the Ukrainian forces counter-attack and occupy parts of the city.

Occupying Sievierodonetsk will extend the Luhansk region to Russian forces and their local separatist allies, who control much of neighboring Donetsk. But their inability to take ground quickly and their continued weakness towards the designated Ukrainian fighters show that Russia’s war plan did not live up to Moscow’s expectations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who said he had visited the front line near Sivirodnetsk on Sunday, said there was fighting on the streets and that the situation was “extremely difficult.” The city is largely in ruins, with thousands of civilians still taking refuge in basements.

Luhansk Oblast Governor Seri Hadai said on Sunday that Ukrainian forces had recaptured about half of Sivirodnetsk, which is difficult to confirm. He said he was waiting for more supplies of Western long-range artillery and missile systems that would be able to hit the Russian artillery population further into Ukraine’s position from a distance.

“As soon as we have enough Western long-range weapons, we will move their cannons away from our position,” he said. Hadai said. “And then, trust me, Russian infantry, they’ll just run.”

Even though it has struggled in the past, Moscow on Sunday gave a reminder that it retains the power to strike most parts of Ukraine, hitting the capital Kyiv for the first time in more than a month. Russian President Vladimir V has been angered by the arrival of long-range missiles in Ukraine to the west. Putin warned that Moscow could hit targets so far unharmed.

Even in the majority Russian-speaking region of eastern Ukraine, the brutality of the Russian campaign যা which Mr. Zelensky called it “incessant air strikes, artillery and missile fires” – intense resistance, long-standing anti-Russian sentiment and the creation of a new Ukrainian nationalism.

But even if they do not, Russia is making slow, bloody progress toward its more limited targets to the east, failing to capture the main southern port of Kyiv, Kharkiv or Odessa.

Speaking on the state-run Russia TV network, Mr Putin was asked about the US announcement that it would provide Ukraine with more sophisticated rocket systems that could hit targets about 40 miles away. Even after he warned of new Russian targets, he sought to reduce rocket deliveries, suggesting that Western nations were filling the stockpile of similar weapons that Ukraine had depleted.

The potential for these more modern, more accurate long-range weapons is obvious. Has caught Putin’s eye. In an interview published on Sunday, he threatened that if Western countries provided long-range missiles to Ukraine, “we have not hit targets before.”

“In my opinion, all this fuss is for the supply of additional weapons: the goal is to bring about as much armed conflict as possible,” Putin said.

Russia is upset with the US decision to supply Ukraine with a Himers truck-mounted multi-launch rocket system, whose missiles have a range of up to 40 miles, which is more than what Ukraine currently has. Since the attack, the Pentagon has supplied Ukraine with 108 M777 Whitzers. But the range of HIMARS missiles is more than twice that of the 155-mm shells fired by Whitzer.

Russia’s Defense Ministry claims that the missiles hit a railway repair workshop and destroyed a number of Soviet-era T-722 tanks distributed by Eastern European countries. Poland and the Czech Republic have sent hundreds of such tanks to Ukraine. Ukrainian officials have denied that any tanks were destroyed.

As the war progressed without evidence that the end was near, Kyiv was hit by a Russian missile early Sunday morning for the first time in five weeks, hurting a sense of relative security. At least five missiles struck near Darnitisia railway station and one near Pozniaki, a residential neighborhood, injuring one.

“I am officially announcing that there is no military equipment in the area of the Darnitsia car repair plant,” Oleksandr Kameshin, head of the board of the Railway Company of Ukraine, wrote in a telegram. “This factory repairs gondola cars and grain trucks, which we use for export.”
