a rare mammal spotted in the jungles of Arunachal Pradesh
Happily for the forest department, the takin (or gnu goat) – one of the rarest mammals – was caught by a trap camera above 3,500 meters in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Kameng district. This is the first picture/image of Takin from East Kameng district, said Vikas Swamy, DFO Seppa. Takin is adapted to its mountainous environment in Asia.

“We found a camera trap image in November. Seppa Forest Division with the help of WWF-India (Knowledge Partner) had installed the cameras above an altitude of 3500 meters as a part of Snow Leopard Survey Programme,” Swamy said.
The exact number of individuals is not known to us, the forest official said, adding: “But it is the largest mammal that is very rare in the wild.”

The majority of the land is owned by the local communities in the state and effectively a very small area comes under the forest department. Many areas have community-run conservation programs, while many have seen widespread hunting for both sustenance and game.
