A goods train crashed at Rani Gaidinliu railway station in Goinglong district of Tamenglong district, putting Manipur on the national railway map.

The 14,000-kronor 111-km-long project from Jiribam to state capital Imphal was approved in 2013. The railway crosses the Noni and Tamenglong mountainous regions.

There will be a total of 46 tunnels and 153 bridges. When completed, the Noni Bridge (141 m) will be the tallest in the world.

Kaimei Railway Station was renamed as Rani Gaidinliu Railway Station to pay tribute to the great freedom fighter who rebelled against the British.
