Officials in the East Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh say high total dissolved substances (TDS) levels have blackened the river water. Locals claim that the level of TDS has increased due to Chinese construction activities across the border.

A river in Arunachal Pradesh has suddenly turned black, killing thousands of fish, the news agency PTI reported on Saturday. Officials have warned people against eating fish floating on the surface of the Kameng River, the news agency added.

District officials have pointed to high levels of total dissolved matter (TDS) as the cause of the river’s blackening in the East Kameng district.

PTI quoted district fisheries officials as saying that TDS causes respiratory problems for aquatic species. Fish underwater have also lost visibility due to high levels of TDS, officials added.

The TDS on the Kameng River was 6,800 milligrams per liter, which is much higher than the normal range of 300-1,200 milligrams per liter, District Fisheries Development Officer (DFDO) Hali Tajo said.

Meanwhile, residents of the village of Seppa, where the incident took place, blamed China, claiming that the TDS level had risen dangerously due to construction activities carried out by neighboring countries across the border.

Seppa East MLA Tapuk Taku has appealed to the state government to immediately form a committee of experts to find out the reasons behind the sudden change in the color of the Kameng River water and the death of a large number of fish.

“If it continues for more than a few days, aquatic life from the river will be completely extinct,” PTI quoted him as saying.

Earlier this week, India stepped up increased activity and patrols by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in sensitive areas across the rival border in Arunachal Pradesh.

Data accessed by the Hindustan Times shows that the Indian Army has identified the increased operational tempo of the PLA in Lungro La, Jimithang and Boom Late, which are historically significant areas in the context of Chinese aggression in the eastern sector. The Army further informed HT that retaliatory measures have been taken.

The military has used satellites, long-range unmanned aerial vehicles, advanced radar networks and high-tech night vision systems to monitor the PLA’s activities. Surveillance traffic has increased due to infrastructural development activities and a large number of excavators and bulldozers to keep road axes open across the Lungro La, Jimithang and Boom La sectors, an official told Hindustan Times.

In 2017, there were reports of blackening similar to the Siang River in Pasighat. At the time, Ninang Ering, a former Congress MP from Arunachal Pradesh, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his intervention, claiming that it was the result of the construction of a 10,000-kilometer long tunnel in China, which diverted water from Siang. Xinjiang Province in the Taklamakan Desert.

China has denied the allegations.
