The bridge is part of an ambitious 111 km long Jiribam-Imphal railway project that connects Manipur with various destinations across the country.
Indian Railways is constructing the world’s tallest bridge at Manipur as part of the 111 km long Jiribam-Imphal railway project.
Manipur’s ambitious project is part of the 111 km long Jiribam-Imphal railway line to connect the capital of Manipur with the country’s broad gauge network.
The bridge, which is being built at a height of 141 meters, will surpass the existing record of 139 meters on the Malar-Rijeka viaduct in Montenegro, Europe.
“Once the project is completed, the 111 km distance will be covered in 2-2.5 hours. Currently, the distance between Jiribam-Imphal (NH-37) is 220 km, which takes about 10-12 hours to travel. The crossing bridge will become the highest pier bridge in the world, “Sandeep Sharma, chief engineer of the project, told ANI.

He added that the work on the bridge will be completed by December 2023.

“The first phase, which is 12 km long, has already been launched. The second phase is about 98 percent complete and will be ready by February 2022. The third phase from Khangsang to Tupul will be completed by November 2022. From Tupul to Imphal valley. The fourth and final phase of the bridge will be completed by December 2023, “he said.
The official added that 61 per cent of the 111-kilometer project has tunnels.
According to the chief engineer, the total estimated cost of the bridge is ₹ 374 crore.
Talking about the hurdles in the construction of the bridge, Sharma said, “Landslides often occur on NH-37 during monsoons, which is the only way to reach this place. It rains a lot from April to October. At that time, it is difficult to work here. There are also issues with the rebellion, which sometimes create problems. ”
