Three Assamese selected for the prestigious 2023 Padma Awards
Guwahati: Three Assamese have been selected for the prestigious Padma Awards for
Hemoprabha Chutia (arts), Hem Chandra Goswami (arts), and Ramquiwangbe Jene (social work) were selected in recognition of their respective contributions in the fields of art, social work and public relations.
Of the total 106 recipients of the Padma Award, 19 are women, two belong to the Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI category, and seven will receive the award posthumously.
The Padma Awards are one of the highest civilian awards in the country, given in various categories including art, social service, public relations, science and engineering, commerce and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports and civil service.

It is awarded in three categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service, the Padma Bhushan for distinguished service at a high level and the Padma Shri for distinguished service in any field.
Announced every year on the occasion of Republic Day, the awards are presented by the President of India at a ceremonial function usually held at Rashtrapati Bhavan around March/ April every year.
A total of six Padma Vibhushans, nine Padma Bhushans, and 91 Padma Shri awards will be conferred this year. Three people from Assam have been nominated for the Padma Shri awards.
The selection of three individuals from Assam for the Padma Shri award is a great recognition for their contribution to the society.
