Three including two CADC members killed in car accident
Aizawl: Three people, including two sitting members of the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC), were killed and two others injured when their vehicle fell into a gorge on the outskirts of Aizawl in the early hours of Monday, police said.
The incident took place when the five people were on their way to Aizawl from Chawangate, the headquarters of the Chakma Council in South Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district.
Police said they had left Chavangate on Sunday evening to meet Chief Minister Zoramthanga in Aizawl.
Police said their vehicle (Gypsy Car) veered off a road and rolled down about 60 meters from a cliff and later caught fire at Khiangchawl in Meltham area on the southern outskirts of Aizawl in the early hours of Monday.
Three died on the spot, while two others – a Zilla Parishad member (MDC) and a village council member – were rushed to a nearby hospital.
The deceased have been identified as Charan Singh Chakma (38) and Mohesh Boran Chakma (40), both members of the District Council (MDC), and Banosandro Tongchangya (46), a village council member of Boroituli village.
Charan Singh was dodging the vehicle.
Police said that the cause of the accident is believed to be the driver dozing off while driving and losing control of the vehicle.
Two injured persons are out of danger.
All the three victims were sent to Zoram Medical College (ZMC) for postmortem.
The liaison officer of Chakma House in Aizawl, Kalendra Tongchangya, said the three deceased would be taken to Chakma House for brief condolence, after which they would be sent to their native villages on Monday.
