Three receive the death penalty in Assam for raping two girls
A fast track court in Assam on Friday sentenced three people to death for the rape and murder of two girls last year. All three were convicted in this case on April 6.
Special Judge C Chaturvedi of Korajhar Fast Track Court sentenced him to death.
The accused were arrested on June 14 last year, days after the girls were found murdered.

The incident had sparked outrage, and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the incident.

The accused were arrested on June 14 last year, days after both the sisters were found hanging from a tree in Kokrajhar.
There was a huge uproar over the incident after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had ordered a probe by a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Chaturvedi in his judgment said that he has come to the conclusion that this case falls in the rarest of the rarest of the rarest of all cases so far as Section 120(b) IPC (whoever is a party to the criminal conspiracy to commit the offence) ) is an offense under is punishable with death), 302 IPC (under which the murderer shall be punished with death and shall also be liable to fine) and section 6 (punishment for aggravated sexual assault) is concerned”.
“In the rarest of rare cases, he is hanged till his death,” the court said.
The judge further ruled that the accused would have to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh each.

He observed that “the default sentence for non-payment of fine is not being passed as the convict has been sentenced to death”.

Failure to pay the fine amount will be recoverable under section 421 (Warrant for imposition of fine) of CrPC and the money will be given to the victim’s family.
The judge also directed that the proceedings of the court be submitted to the Gauhati High Court as mandated by law.
