60 to 100 Ukrainian soldiers are killed every day on the ground, and another 500 are injured, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told Newsmax in an interview with US Newsmax.

The Ukrainian government estimated last week that Russians have lost more than 30,000 soldiers since they began the invasion on February 24th.

“The situation in the East is very difficult,” Zelensky told Newsmax.

“60 to 100 soldiers a day are lost, abducted, and about 500 people are injured during the protests,” the 44-year-old leader said, through an interpreter.

The level of losses comes when the Ukrainian army tries to block the focus of a powerful Russian force that seeks full control of the eastern part of Lugansk.

The Russian army is said to be close to taking control of the city of Severodonetsk, after a prolonged siege involving heavy artillery and airstrikes.

“We’re holding the security zone” in the east, Zelensky said.

Indications from the battlefield suggest that the Russians also suffered heavy losses.
