A spokesman for the Ukrainian General Staff said in a statement that fuel from the destroyed ships had leaked into the river delta and also accused Moscow’s military of mishandling the ships’ engines and other equipment.

The Ukrainian General Staff did not provide any explanation for Moscow’s actions. Destroying civilian ships would prevent Ukrainian forces from using them if they decide to cross the eastern flank in the event of any Russian withdrawal.
There was no immediate comment from the Russian Defense Ministry.
The statement fit a pattern of rising tensions in the region where Russian-established occupation officials said on Sunday that an act of sabotage had cut off electricity and water supplies to the city of Kherson and several settlements.
