The three nuclear-armed states at the UNSC, the US, France and Britain, said Russia’s allegations were “transparently false” in a joint statement. They believe that Russia can conduct a “false flag” strike using a dirty bomb to justify using nuclear weapons, while it is damaging in eastern and southern Ukraine.
With repeated nuclear saber rattles, Russia can hope to discourage the West from engaging directly in the conflict. Nevertheless, it is unlikely that Ukraine would use “dirty bombs”.
A “dirty bomb” is a conventional bomb that disperses radioactive, biological, or chemical material during an explosion. The term is often used interchangeably with a radiological dispersal device (RDD), a weapon that uses radioactive elements.
