Ukrainian Photojournalist found dead near Capital Kyiv

Ukrainian journalist Max Levin was reportedly traveled to Vishgorod, Kiev, to document the conflict when he was killed after being allegedly shot by Russian forces.

A Ukrainian journalist was found dead near the capital, Kiev, after he had disappeared more than two weeks ago, Ukraine’s assistant to the president, Andriy Yermak, told AFP when the 38th war broke out.

“Max Levin disappeared in the conflict zone on March 13 in the Kiev region. His body was found on April 1 near the village of Guta Mezigirsk,” he said in a telegram.

According to the Ukrainian newspaper The Kyiv Independent, Levin had gone to Vyshgorod in Kiev to document the conflict. He had worked with renowned media organizations, including Reuters, the BBC and the Associated Press. He was survived by his wife and four children.

According to an investigation by a non-governmental organization called the Mass Information Institute, Levin was killed in “two shots” by Russian forces. In 2014, he had managed to escape the siege of a city in eastern Ukraine during the fighting between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists.

Just a week ago, a journalist for the news newspaper The Insider was killed in a Russian shooting in a residential area in Kiev. Oksana Baulina had also worked in the anti-corruption group of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

On March 15, Pierre Zakzewski, the operator of Fox News, was killed when a car he and his colleague were driving near Horenka, near Kiev. New York Times journalist Brent Reno was shot dead on March 13 near Irpin.

The battles between the Ukrainian and Russian forces entered on the 38th day. However, the Ukrainian authorities claim that the Russians are “rapidly withdrawing” from Kiev and the northern city of Chernihiv.
