UN inspectors find no traces of dirty bombs in Ukraine
The UN nuclear watchdog has said no signs of “undeclared nuclear activities” were found at three sites in Ukraine at Kyiv’s request after Russian allegations related to so-called “dirty bombs”.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in a statement on Thursday that it has been given “unfettered access” to the Institute for Nuclear Research in Kyiv, the Eastern Mining and Processing Plant in Zovti Kody, and the Production Association Pivdennyi Machine-Building Plant in Dnipro.

“Based on an evaluation of the results available to date and information provided by Ukraine, the agency found no indication of undisclosed nuclear activities and material at the locations,” the Vienna-based organization said.
The inspectors also took environmental samples that would be sent for laboratory analysis and the IAEA would report back on the results, the statement said.

All three sites were mentioned by Russia in connection with its baseless allegation that Ukraine was planning to use a dirty bomb – a conventional explosive device containing radioactive, biological or chemical material.
Russia’s UN ambassador, Vasily Nebenzia, claimed in a letter sent to members of the UN Security Council last week that Ukraine’s nuclear research facility and mining company “for developing such dirty bombs [President Volodymyr] received orders directly from the regime of Zelensky”.
Moscow has not provided evidence for its claims, which the Ukrainian government has dismissed as false.
Some Ukrainian and Western officials have accused Moscow of giving itself cover and blamed Kyiv for detonating its dirty bombs.
