11 people were also injured in the operation by the security forces, while one soldier was killed in the riots that followed.

The Army has ordered a Court of Inquiry into the civilian killings and expressed deep regret over the incident. Army officials said the operation in Mon district, bordering Myanmar, was carried out on the basis of credible intelligence inputs about possible movement of insurgents in the area.
The Army’s Nagaland-based 3 Corps Headquarters said in a statement: “Based on credible intelligence inputs of a possible movement of insurgents, a special operation was planned at Tiru, Som District, Nagaland.
