US Democrats Urge Joe Biden To Negotiate With Russia To End Ukraine War
Left-wing US lawmakers to engage directly with Russia to find a solution “acceptable to the Ukrainian people.”
On Monday, left-wing US lawmakers urged President Joe Biden to seek a negotiated solution with Russia to end the war in Ukraine.
In a letter, 30 Democrats led by Mr. Biden said they opposed Russia’s “outrageous and unlawful invasion of Ukraine,” agreeing with the White House that reconciliation is up to Kyiv.

“However, as a legislator responsible for spending tens of billions of dollars of US taxpayers on military assistance in conflicts, such an engagement in this war requires the United States to seriously explore all possible avenues. I think it also creates responsibility,” said Rep. Pramila Jayapal, leader of the House Progressive Party Caucus.
They called for direct engagement with Russia to find a solution “acceptable to the Ukrainian people”.
“Such a framework includes mobilizing the international community to end hostilities, including some form of sanctions relief, and to establish security guarantees for a free and independent Ukraine that are acceptable to all parties, especially Ukrainians. It would probably include incentives to let them do it,” they wrote.

“The alternative to diplomacy is protracted warfare, with both the certainty and the devastating and unknown risks that come with it.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin had demanded assurances that the former Soviet republics would never join NATO, the Western military alliance, before launching the invasion on February 24.
The U.S. official was skeptical that NATO was his real concern, pointing out that Ukraine was unlikely to join the alliance and engaged in top-level talks with Russia until the invasion.
Asked about the letter, State Department spokesman Ned Price said, “Nobody wants this war over more than their Ukrainian counterparts.”

“We don’t know when that will happen, mainly because we have not seen any indication that Russia is ready to participate in its diplomacy and dialogue,” he told reporters.

“We have provided our Ukrainian partners with what they need on the battlefield so that when the negotiating table appears, they will be in the strongest possible position,” Price said.
“We are very clear, Ukraine is nothing without Ukraine,” White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said.
The US approved her $40 billion aid to Ukraine in May, providing arms and spearheading Western efforts to prop up an economy ravaged by Russia’s attack.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who had reluctantly offered the possibility of dropping NATO’s proposal to avert war, vowed to defeat the Russian aggressors and take back the lands they had occupied.
