How the US midterm elections could mean for the war in Ukraine

While Republicans have expressed dismay at the party’s performance in the midterm elections so far, the GOP is set to retake the House of Representatives, which could spell trouble for Ukraine.

Some Republican officials have shared that they will cut or eliminate funding to the Eastern European country as it defends itself against Russia’s invasion, which began in February.

Here’s what some lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have to say about the United States’ support for Ukraine, and what the midterm election results could mean for Ukraine going forward.

What politicians have said about Ukraine ahead of the midterm elections
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., who is expected to become speaker if his party retakes the chamber, said last month that Republicans “won’t write blank checks” to Ukraine as it deters Russia’s invasion.

McCarthy later said that the comment was being interpreted more as anti-Ukraine: “Don’t you want checks and balances in Congress? Don’t you want this hardworking taxpayer money, someone is looking after it? Wasteful spending in Washington.”

Others in the caucus have taken a tough stand. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green, R-Ga., who won her re-election bid on Tuesday, said during a Trump rally in Iowa last week that “under Republicans, no more money will go to Ukraine. Our country comes first.” ”

“I suspect this is going to be a slow, gradual change during the next Congress. In general, support for Ukraine seems very popular right now,” said Scott Anderson, a former US diplomat and visiting fellow in Governance Studies at Brookings. Huh. The Institution told ABC News last week. “I don’t think Republicans want to run headlong against it.”

But Republicans are not the only ones who have indicated financially supporting Ukraine.

Some Democratic politicians have also expressed doubts over whether their party will continue to support the Biden administration’s approach towards Ukraine, particularly with regard to the push for talks with Russia.

In late October, 30 House Progressives signed a letter asking the White House to link aid to Kyiv with the movement toward an end to the conflict.

One legislator in the group, Pramila Jayapal, withdrew it after heavy scrutiny with D-Wash. We are united as Democrats.” and freedom.”

According to the Defense Department, since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the US has given Ukraine more than $18.9 billion in security aid.

Last week, the Defense Department provided $400 million in security assistance to the country, including funding for air defense missiles, refurbished tanks, armor packages, and strategic secure communications and surveillance systems.
