The New York Times, citing security officials there, reported that 17 American Christian missionaries and their families, including children, were abducted Saturday by gang members in Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince. The Times said the kidnapping happened when missionaries were leaving an orphanage in the beleaguered Caribbean country. The report, citing local officials, said they were abducted from a bus headed to the airport to drop some members of the group.

A spokesman for the Haitian police said it was seeking information on the issue. The report did not give details about the missionaries or their church.
The escalation in mass violence has displaced thousands and disrupted economic activity in America’s poorest country. Violence intensified after the July assassination of President Jovenel Mois and the August earthquake that killed more than 2,000 people.
