Vladimir Putin losing confidence in the Ukraine war, the former Russian PM said
Former Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov says the war in Ukraine has shaken Vladimir Putin’s confidence.
In an interview with DW on Friday from an undisclosed location in Europe, he said the Russian president may have been deceived by his generals about the state of the war.

Mikhail Kasyanov, who served as prime minister under Vladimir Putin in the early 2000s, told DW that he believed the Russian president “already began to feel that he was going to lose this war.”
Prior to his dismissal, Kasyanov served as Putin’s first prime minister from 2000 to 2004, and formed an opposition party in 2008 to run for president. He became a vocal opponent, and now lives in exile.
He told DW that Putin did not speak from a strong position and was “a little nervous” during a speech at a military parade marking “Victory Day” on May 9, commemorating the end of World War II. “See also.
Kasyanov supports the theory put forward by many analysts as to how Putin’s inner circle withheld information for fear of spreading bad news or not giving a full picture of the war situation.
“I am sure he has been betrayed,” Kasyanov said, adding that Putin believed “his army is [certainly] in good shape” and that the attack would take some time.

This comes just weeks after Russia withdrew from Kyiv and re-concentrated its forces east of the country.
In his speech, Putin doubled the war, falsely claiming that Ukraine could have nuclear weapons and that the country was led by neo-Nazis. Claiming that the West was planning to invade Russia, the Russian president said the attack was “the only right decision”.
“Mr. Putin’s response and his speech were really weak,” Kasyanov said, adding that Putin “already began to realize that he had lost the war.”
With Russia suffering multiple defeats on the battlefield, Kasyanov warned that Putin could try to push the conflict to a new level.
“Now we are moving to another level – this level of competition, the economic potential, the military potential,” he said, adding that the decision by the West to send heavy weapons to Ukraine would give Kiev a “decisive advantage” in the future.

“We have a parliament, we have an independent parliament – we have a free media, we have a judiciary. Today the world is completely different,” he said. “Mr Putin has destroyed all the features of a democratic state. There is a regime that is becoming truly authoritarian and gradually becoming authoritarian. ”
After working with Putin, Kasyanov said the Russian leader had changed radically. “I worked with him 20 years ago. He was a completely different person. It was a completely different situation then,” he said.
