World War II old bomb explodes in Manipur
Imphal: Security forces on Saturday destroyed an old World War II bomb found during excavation in Manipur’s Thoubal district. Police officials gave this information.
The unexploded shell was dumped at an isolated spot in Vaithou Chiru paddy field under Lilong police station around 1.30 pm on Saturday.
Lilong Chirubi farmer M Ajit Meitei, 45, found the bombs while digging in his rice field on Friday.
On receiving the information, a team of Lilong police station reached the spot and took possession of the bombs and took them safely into their custody.
Later on Saturday afternoon, the Bomb Disposal Squad of Manipur Police defused the bombs at a safe place in Vaithou Chirubi area.
The Northeast was the site of many fierce battles in World War II as Japanese forces invaded British India and reached Manipur and Nagaland.
WW-II explosives and other war material have been found in Manipur and Nagaland over the years.
