Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said his country’s military was “doing everything” to stop the Russian offensive, with fierce fighting in the east and south.

Kyiv said on Friday that it has launched new airstrikes in the southern province of Kherson, one of the first areas occupied by Russia since the February 24 offensive.

But Zelensky said on Friday that “very difficult battles” were taking place, including in the eastern Donbass region where Moscow has concentrated its firepower, particularly around the eastern industrial city of Severodnetsk.

“The Ukrainian military is doing everything it can to stop colonial attacks,” Zelensky said in a speech.

“As heavy weapons, modern artillery – we all demand and keep asking our allies – allow.”

In the Mykolaiv area near the front line to the south, the provincial governor stressed the urgent need for international military assistance.

“The Russian army is strong, they have a lot of artillery and ammunition. For now, this is an artillery war  and we are running out of ammunition,” said Vitaly Kim.

“European and American aid is very important because we need ammunition to defend our country.”

Zelensky said in his speech that Ukraine “should not allow the world to be distracted by what is happening on the battlefield.”

In the city of Lisichansk, across the river from Severodonetsk, people told AFP their real choice: to stay and face gunfire, or run away and leave their homes.

Yeven Ziryada, 39, said the only way to get water is to go to a water distribution site in the city.

“We have to go there under fire, and under fire,” he said.

“That’s how we survive.”

With rising concerns over the global food crisis, shock waves from the conflict are echoing around the world – Ukraine is a major agricultural power and a major grain exporter.

Adviser to the French President Emmanuel Macron said France is ready to assist with operations to allow safe access to Ukraine’s Black Sea port of Odessa.

It is subject to de facto sanctions by Russia, with grain waiting to be shipped.

France wants a “victory for Ukraine“, the adviser said, adding that Macron recently sparked controversy by suggesting Russia should not be embarrassed.

Moscow poured its troops across the border into Ukraine on February 24 after warnings from the United States and its allies that Russia was planning an invasion.

US President Joe Biden said on Friday that Zelensky had dismissed the warning.

“There’s no doubt about it and Zelensky doesn’t want to hear it and so do a lot of people,” Biden said at the fundraiser. “I understand why they don’t want to hear it.”

The war has destroyed Ukrainian cities and left millions homeless, marginalizing European countries.

Nine of them – Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia – on Friday urged NATO to increase its eastern flank.
