Zelensky wants direct talks with Xi Jinping to help end the war in Ukraine
In an interview, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky urged China to use its enormous political and economic influence on Russia to end the fighting.
The South China Morning Post reported on Thursday that Ukraine is seeking an opportunity to speak “directly” with Chinese leader Xi Jinping to help end its war with Russia.

Zelensky said in the report, “It’s a very powerful state. It’s a powerful economy … so [it] can affect Russia politically and economically. And China [also] a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.” is a member.”
Zelensky said, “I want to speak directly. I had a conversation with Xi Jinping a year ago.” He said the Chinese leader had spoken warmly about bilateral relations at that time. After February 24, he said, Kyiv formally requested talks with Beijing. “But we haven’t had any talks with China, although I think it will be helpful,” Zelensky said.
The president said that China is “a very powerful state and a powerful economy, so it can affect Russia politically and economically.” Zelensky stressed that without the Chinese market, Russia would feel in complete economic isolation.
At the same time, he said he understood Beijing’s desire to maintain a “balanced” attitude towards development in Ukraine. However, Ukraine’s leader said he wanted China to reconsider its attitude towards Russia.

Asked whether he would welcome Beijing’s help in rebuilding the destroyed infrastructure at home, Zelensky said he expected “China, Chinese companies” and “the whole world” to contribute to the process.
After February 24, China refrained from condemning Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine. Beijing believed that the West had played a major role in fueling hostility towards Russia in Ukraine and conflict between the two countries.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on 24 February that, in response to a request from the heads of the Donbass republics, he had decided to conduct a special military operation. He insisted that Moscow’s plans did not include the occupation of Ukrainian territories.
